The word mandala is from the ancient Hindu language of Sanskrit, meaning container of sacred essence. Mandalas originated in India but the Buddha used them in his teachings of enlightenment.
Mandala comes from the word Sanskrit meaning circle and all mandalas have a centre point. Every mandala has a concentric circle and mandalas have shapes and symbols with lots of patterns going around the shape.
Mandalas are different for different cultures. 'Manda means essence and we add la which means container.
